Senior Activity Specialist
I’m a California State Certified Activity Leader in Healthcare with a degree in music. I have been volunteering and working with seniors for 20 years, both as an activity director in assisted living, and privately with persons having dementia.
I bring a unique understanding of the developmental stages of seniors and their communication styles, allowing for healthy interaction and fulfilling experiences.
The State Certified Senior Activity Leader certification includes:
- Program planning
- Development and leadership
- Management skills
- Physical, biological and psychosocial/emotional characteristics of aging
- Creative techniques to ensure person-centered programming
“I help seniors share their stories and age with dignity.”
My Process
Successful activities should have a purpose, give the senior a sense of importance, and honor their life.
Before the first activity session with a new client I have a phone conversation or meet with a family point person to gather information about the senior’s life including: birth place, date of birth, childhood experiences, school history, career path, family make-up, hobbies, organizations, culture, travel, and physical and mental abilities.
If it’s a board and care I speak with the board and care owner to find out all I can about the residents for group activities.
Client information is used to plan activity sessions and also find a common interest or angle to help start the relationship.
Every visit is followed up with a note to the family or board and care owner with a note about the activity session and picture(s).
